Project Highlight: IDD Crisis Service Diagnostic Center & Center for IDD Care
MACON, GA – The new IDD Crisis Service Diagnostic Center & Center for IDD Care in Macon, Georgia, developed by River Edge Behavioral Health in partnership with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) and Mercer University School of Medicine, is a pioneering integrated care facility dedicated exclusively to adults with IDD. It aims to transform crisis response and healthcare delivery for this underserved population by providing short-term behavioral and crisis stabilization services, including sixteen (16) inpatient beds, alongside a full spectrum of outpatient specialized healthcare services under one roof. This model eliminates the need for multiple appointments at different locations, ensuring timely, equitable, and person-centered crisis intervention and comprehensive medical, dental, psychiatric, and general healthcare.
The Center's mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment where adults with IDD receive specialized attention to promote health, dignity, and quality of life. It serves individuals statewide to reduce reliance on emergency rooms and hospitals ill-equipped for their complex needs. Services include neurology, psychiatry, physical and occupational therapy, dentistry, ophthalmology, speech-language pathology, imaging (X-ray, mammography), on-site lab and pharmacy, and audiology. The facility also focuses on educating future healthcare professionals and clinical research to improve care and outcomes.
The design process of the Center involves a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach, addressing unique crisis needs of individuals with IDD, including detailed programming, safety risk assessment, stakeholder engagement, and integration of specialized clinical and support spaces to create a therapeutic and dignified environment. This responds to identified gaps in psychiatric and behavioral health services for IDD individuals, fostering person-centered, high-quality care.
The Center represents a significant advancement in integrated, accessible healthcare for IDD adults in Georgia, with the goal of improved health outcomes and quality of life, including reintegration into the community. It is the first facility of its kind in Georgia and a model potentially for other regions.
Lighting Associates was honored to work alongside Azar + Walsh Architects, Electrical Design Consultants, All-State Electrical, and Parrish Construction Group on this project.
